Although I would much prefer making some pictures in the summer where I don’t have to wear 9 layers of clothes or worry about acclimatizing my equipment before heading out in -20 Celsius weather, you can get some famous pictures in the dead of winter. Pure snow can provide a dreamy background and best of all, no setup required. I took these pictures of my son having fun on a cold day snowmobiling. I used a 70-200 f/2.8 to keep my distance and was able to get some perfect candid shots of him having fun. If I was to be at a closer focal length he’d do what most 7 year old kids would do, pose for the camera and act silly, which isn’t bad from time to time but if you want to capture the moment you really don’t want your subject knowing so.
